Community and Environment Program

Marsh is committed to investing in programs which benefit and support the communities in which we work and belong. This firm belief in corporate social responsibility has seen our company establish the Marsh Community and Environment Program, through which we aim to make a sustainable contribution to the vulnerable and disadvantaged in the community as well as taking measures that foster the sustainability of the environment.

Since the Program’s launch, Marsh employees have engaged in a number of projects and activities that include fundraising and making financial contributions, offering specialist and professional expertise and volunteering. It is Marsh’s aim to grow the depth and breadth of this Program over the coming years.

Community initiatives

Encompassed in the Program are a number of community initiatives, including a workplace giving program that enables Marsh colleagues to make pre-tax donations from their pay and for those donations to be matched by Marsh. All colleagues are able to contribute to a selection of eligible charities.

The establishment of a program to enable colleagues to take one day of paid volunteering leave per annum will also provide coordinated support to ensure colleagues engage in meaningful volunteer experiences

Additionally, Marsh supports a range of charities at a local level where our offices are located and provides coordinated and national support for community events such as Movember, Jeans for Genes, Biggest Morning Tea, and the Mother’s Day Classic.

Environment initiatives

As part of our commitment to limit our impact on the environment, Marsh has also implemented the following range of initiatives.

  • The establishment of rigorous measurement of major resources including electricity, paper and travel in order to establish baseline usage data and set targeted reductions
  • Procurement decisions regarding document storage, printing stationery and travel that include consideration of environment and sustainability criteria
  • Continual engagement with our employees in environmental awareness through regular communications and activities such as Earth Hour, paper, plastics, cork and mobile phone recycling initiatives and prudent use of electricity

These initiatives are supported by existing policies and measures like our ongoing commitment to utilising energy-efficient solutions for our premises in Australia. This includes factors such as energy-efficient cooling and air-conditioning systems, as well as water and electricity-saving measures that reduce our impact on the environment.

Marsh employees get their hands dirty for the environment

In December 2009, six volunteers from Marsh's Melbourne office headed to the Centre for Education and Research in Environmental Strategies (CERES) in Melbourne’s northern suburb Brunswick.

CERES  is a sustainability project in the heart of the city. CERES runs on renewable energy, is a 55 tonne carbon sink, conserves and recycles its water and waste, grows organic food, and teaches diverse audiences about more just and environmentally friendly ways of living.

Helping job seekers re-enter the workforce

On the morning of the 10 December 2009, six staff from Marsh volunteered their time to participate in mock interviews to help the long-term unemployed.

Juno Consulting partners with the Salvation Army to create programs that enable the business community to become involved in helping long term unemployed confidently re-enter the workforce. This is done via mock interviews, team activities and success orientated and ethic based training.
