Environmental Risks

Environmental issues are a growing concern for many organisations. The enforcement of environmental regulations through the criminal courts and, to a lesser degree, civil courts has raised awareness of the business impact of poor environmental management.

As community interest and expectations become increasingly onerous, we expect that civil court proceedings will continue to draw attention to poor environmental performers.

The environmental issues that affect most organisations include:

  • emissions to atmosphere
  • discharges to soil
  • discharges to water bodies, including stormwater run-off
  • trade waste disposal arrangements
  • nuisance emissions, including noise and odour
  • waste disposal arrangements
  • compliance with legislative requirements

However, the less obvious environmental risk issues are more often the ones that will impact on the bottom line. These can include:

  • energy and resource usage
  • contaminated sites from previous activities or acquisitions
  • responding to emergencies and major pollution incidents
  • managing complaints from neighbours, action groups and employees
  • measuring and reporting environmental performance

These strategic operational issues are often overlooked in traditional audits or risk management programs.

Our Risk Consulting practice has extensive experience in managing environmental risks and can assist your organisation to understand the potential impact of such risks, prevent their occurrence and reduce their impact.
